How to “Queer the Census”

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

Did you know this post has been in gestation for nearly one whole week? I’ve been thinking and thinking and thinking about it…and you know what they say: write or get off the ‘Press.

I ordered my Queer the Census sticker a while ago, and I was holding out on the paperwork until it arrived. The Census bureau got so itchy-fingered that they sent me another Census form. How kind.

I finally received my sticker about two days ago, and have thusly created a video demonstrating how I queered the Census.

I wonder if they will find my response worth the wait and extra postage.

It may be a little late now to get your stickers, but! Never you fear! You can print out your own sticker to seal your Census form with!

You may or may not remember a certain Tweet in which I “queered” my closet (Hah!).

I bet you didn’t believe me.

FEB TO APRIL 008

I have a silver and gold section too.

FEB TO APRIL 009

Ironically, I got a gig this week shooting cars for this exhibit at my alma mater (ironically).

I was also assigned to take photos of the library.

Again, ironic.

Don’t you think?

Aaand if you’re sitting at home wondering what to do with your weekend, wonder no more.

Happy St Patrick’s Day – be safe & make sure to Queer the Census

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

There will be checkpoints throughout Los Angeles tonight, so don’t even try it. Instead take a cab, take the bus, or simply walk.

Usually AAA offers a free towing service on major holidays such as today for those who drive and have one too many, but I can’t find any information on it regarding tonight. As my sister pointed out, however, there is YDriveLA, a pay service in which a sober driver comes to your car on a folding scooter, which he then packs up in your trunk to drive you and your car home. Or – as I’ve once done – if you’re a AAA member, you can try simply calling and asking to be towed home because you feel unfit to drive. Depending on your membership benefits, you are eligible for a certain amount of free tows within a certain mile radius.

And while you’re thinking about that Guiness, take a moment to order your free Queer the Census sticker by clicking here – make sure to get your request in before the March 22nd deadline.

Another campaign is asking to write in your gender identity. Apparently, however, if you check neither of the given choices, it will be chosen for you by the Census Bureau, but! it will be a very loud and clear statement for the inclusion of other options on the form.

This weekend, celebrate gender evolution with BENT’s Like, Drag Me With a Spoon. Sadly, I will not be able to attend this time, but I’ve been before and it is so much fun – so don’t miss out!

The perils of dye, photos from the Trans-Genre CD Release Party, and general genderbending good times

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

So I read online that one way to help preserve pink hair color is to mix a little dye with your conditioner. I failed to consider my hands in this process, so, as you can imagine, my palms are an alien shade of pink. Lesson learned.

And guys! I totally failed you! I forgot to tell you about the Trans-Genre CD Release Party!

It was awesome…it was an awesome evening of music and community. I felt the presence of change through community, and the language it spoke was music.

Maybe things really can be okay.

…gosh, I really hope so.

You can find the rest of the photos here.

Speaking of community, make sure you don’t miss out on this totally bitchin’ night of eighties themed drag, burlesque, and genderfucking.

Friday: Happy Valentine’s Day!

Friday, February 12th, 2010

Even when I was single, I never understood the anti-Valentine’s sentiment. Sure, it’s an entirely corporate holiday – perhaps inspired by a martyred Roman saint and later co-opted by an entrepreneurial woman named Esther Howland who sold handmade cards from her home pre-Etsy – but I never perceived it as the affront to loneliness that many seem to. Admittedly, this year, I am excited for this weekend’s plans, which include both conventional and very unconventional methods of celebration, but if I had no one’s hand to hold, I suppose I would simply ignore it.

But we didn’t ignore it last weekend. Instead, we broke it! At Heart On’s Heartbreak Valentine’s….

If you listen to Ben Oprstu’s latest track, you’re certain to start dancing. And if you’re dancing, that’s almost like having sex.

And if that doesn’t work, then save your pennies, cause next weekend Gender Justice LA is throwing a fundraiser party…and not only will Yours Truly be present, but it’s a tremendously great cause, and there’s no better way to give Valentine’s the middle finger than to donate your money to justice rather than throw it at a greeting card company. I’m just sayin’!

But seriously folks, Valentine’s or not, just have the raddest weekend possible.

And who knows? Maybe you’ll get lucky.

Here’s hoping!

Friday: Photos: The Trevor Project Counselor Social

Friday, November 20th, 2009

In case you didn’t know, HappyLand has officially gone into business. HappyLand’s primary service is event and party photography, with a photobooth coming very very soon (In fact, if you’re curious, my first photobooth gig is December 6th, stay tuned for further details!). HappyLand provides additional creative services such as writing, artwork, and event planning. Besides creating a superb product, HappyLand strives to operate with a unique vision of beauty, love, and positivity, with a specific fondness for the underground scene here in Los Angeles. So if you are in need of a photographer, have a look at my work and get in touch with me. Rates start at $50 for a four hour event.

The omens all seemed to be pointing in this direction, and I’d be a fool to ignore them. I seem to be correct, because the very moment I decided to go into business for myself, I received two phone calls from friends for photo gigs!

Last weekend I was asked to come photograph The Trevor Project’s Counselor Social. The Trevor Project is a truly wonderful organization that provides “crisis and suicide prevention efforts for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth” and “operates the only accredited, nationwide, around-the-clock crisis and suicide prevention helpline for LGBTQ youth.” So if you ever need someone to talk to, please don’t hesitate to call.

It was a very lovely evening, and it’s touching to know that there are so many selfless, generous, kind, and giving people in a world that is often cruel to those who are “different.” The night was filled with warm greetings, laughter, fun, stories of tragedy and stories of triumph. I’m honored to have been in the presence of these people and to be allowed to contribute in my small way. I tried to capture that in my photographs, though the setting posed some challenges. I think I succeeded.

In this season of giving, please consider The Trevor Project, and give to someone’s future.

And while you’re in the giving spirit, come out to the Food Not Bombs benefit show this Sunday at The Smell!

Thank you for reading and I hope you all have restful, fun, safe weekends!

Wednesday: Target: Women, That’s Gay, Conserve water: Pee in the shower!

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

In the continuing fun time adventures of Yours Truly, not all things have actually been Fun Times. In fact, there has been some recent sad news that I will address later. But not right now. There is a season for everything – turn, turn, turn.

As you know, I (pretentiously) dislike television, mostly for its passiveness, its general perpetuation of conventions and stereotypes, and the inane commercials that slice it up.

Today I had myself a Target: Women marathon and seeing advertisements reduced to their exploitative, stereotyping strategies was almost intellectually offensive. If that sounds a little pretentious to you, just have a look.

Which makes me think of Britain’s push to ban excessive Photoshopping, or to at least require “media literacy” classes in school. In high school I was fortunate enough to take such a class and obviously, its lessons have left me a much more savvy, informed viewer. And it’s also why I try to avoid the whole mess altogether.

I recently responded to an acquaintance’s “I just don’t agree with the lifestyle” argument for inequality with a challenge to reconsider. This woman had the audacity to tell me that she “respects me” and “not to take offense” because she “won’t apologize for her beliefs” and that her “gay friends” still accept her, so it’s all okay, right?

I feel sorry for anyone who considers the above to be logical arguments or anecdotes. Choosing to ride a bicycle is a “lifestyle,” who I am attracted to is not. Telling someone you “respect” her yet do not believe she deserves equality is anything but respect since it denies one her humanity all together. You think segregation was born out of “respect?” Should I not take offense to blatant inequality? Should I not be offended by racism or sexism? Yes, your “beliefs” are offensive because I am just as human as you are. Shame on her “gay friends” for allowing themselves to be so disrespected because equality is a battle that you won’t win in the streets, it’s one you will win with open discussions.

Mostly, however, it is tremendously disappointing and heartbreaking. And frustrating. These are the weakest and most hurtful arguments for the opposition to gay marriage because they are basically discrimination ignorantly disguised with a veil of placation. I told her I was disappointed and hurt, and left her with a dare to reevaluate her position, and have since cased communication. I try to populate my life with only good, positive people.

Naturally, I was tickled with yet another gem from Current which, like Target: Women, comically exposes stereotypes and fallacies in our media and society.

To lighten the mood around here, I present to you a charming Brazilian PSA urging (Hahah, get it?) people to urinate in the shower to conserve water.

Yours Truly has been practicing water conservation for years!

All right, so maybe advertising isn’t all that bad.

Thursday: Chew your news

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

Chew your news, swallow it whole, or take a laxative, just remember to take your vitamins and get plenty of rest.

Cycling: Streetsblog Los Angeles summarizes LA City Council’s Transportation Committee meeting concerning cyclists’ issues from earlier this week (Yesterday, in fact!). The outcome? Well….

LGBTQ: The murder of transwoman Lateisha Green finally garners some attention with the alleged perpetrator facing hate crime charges in the upcoming trial.

Sex: Safe sex good! Sexual violence/confusing messages bad! A recent safer sex ad campaign troubles viewers, and with good reason. (NSFW)
