Ranting & Raving & Riding

Monday, June 28th, 2010

So on the heels of my proposed correlation between the overturning of Prop 8 to revive California’s economy so that the LAPD will receive the funds it needs to operate as the noble organization we all know it to be (Sarcasm?), some of the Boys in Blue participated in an event that, at least for now, begins to redeem their name in my book (Not that my book has any significance, but that’s how the saying goes).

Though I’ve placed some physical distance between myself and the Los Angeles bike scene, I still keep a virtual eye on its movement, and last week my feeds buzzed with the whispers of seemingly secret talks between the appointed leaders of LA Critical Mass and the LAPD.

On Friday – a month since the heinous misconduct of police during CM’s route through Hollywood – cyclists from all over gathered to celebrate, protest, and socialize at the sacred Wilshire and Western meet up. And among them were some unlikely guests.

According to Alex Thompson’s Bikeside LA, members of the LAPD came to ride with June’s Critical Mass. One of them even mounted a certain famed tall bike and rode around, much to everyone’s delight.

Whether or not this was a true passing of the olive branch – or handlebars – between former enemies still remains to be seen, and of course, I have my doubts. Nor does a friendly jaunt with the other side correct any of the graver concerns of cycling in Los Angeles, but I imagine that to the witness driver, the presence of authority legitimizes Critical Mass’ cause, and maybe – just maybe – inspires him to break the bike out of the garage.

From an activist point of view, it seems a step in the right direction, for cooperation can forge the path to understanding and community. But from a feminist cyclist point of view, it seems to be only a distraction from the problems that still exist within the cycling community. The problems that drove me (Perhaps literally!) away from it.

Those problems are partly my fault, for abandoning the community as a lost cause.

But I’m ready to take responsibility now.

The road of life can be unpredictable so don’t ride it alone

Instead ride with a Road ID.

My younger sister just got a road bike because she is training for a triathlon. I haven’t had the heart to tell her that [ Bike Snob ] thinks triathletes are at the bottom of the recreationally athletic totem pole, but then again, Bike Snob has also indirectly directly [ made fun of me ].

BIKE SNOB TAKES NO PRISONERS

But the Bike Snob can’t make fun of the [ Road ID ] and my very sweet very smart sister was adamant that I should have one – she even sent me a gift certificate for one, which I promptly ordered. As a result, I received a coupon for a dollar off to pass on. So I’m [ passing it on to you ] (Discount appears at check out).

Ride safe.

If I told you half the crazy things I’ve seen, you wouldn’t believe most of them

If I told you half the crazy things I’ve seen, you wouldn’t believe most of them.

For instance, a guy came into the bike shop about two weeks ago who hadn’t worn shoes in eleven years. He’d modified his pedals with reinforced flip-flops. He said his feet are dirty, but not callused. I thought it was pretty cool.

I met a woman who is ninety-nine and a half years old who was an actress in olden times. If I make it to twenty-five and a half years old I’ll be more than surprised.

At some point I was walking with my bike on a very windy day when I saw a man enjoying himself at my expense. Since I did not consent, I found this wrong, and since I am a photographer, I snapped a picture as quickly as I could before he ran away, and since I am smart, I called the police. I am not going to dignify that fellow with that photo here. And anyway, it’s already been issued throughout the Santa Monica police department. I am pretty sure he won’t be showing his face (Or his dick) anytime soon.

If we’ve learned anything from the above incident, it’s that that’s no proper way to leave your mark.

I bought a shiny new MacBook. It’s for “work.”

But even a new MacBook can’t change the fact that right now in my life, the glasses often feel only half full.

Google unveiled its Bicycling Directions today so I used it – with favorable results – which made me do some writing

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Today was quite newsworthy for cyclists all over as today was the day Google unveiled its Bicycling directions option. My Twitter and Facebook feeds buzzed with links and praise.

I plugged in my home address from work and was directed to one of the best rides home. Park Way is one of the best solutions to Santa Monica Boulevard’s dark, torn up east bound lane-slash-racetrack. You do have to cross some major streets, but they are not nearly as difficult to manage as 4th Street’s two major crossings.

It was a little dark and a little desolate, but you are also riding between Beverly Hills homes, so you are never truly alone. Large backyard trees leave potentially flat-inducing shedding…but you’ve always got your flat kit on you – right? The route works better westbound than eastbound, where you have to attempt an unprotected left turn back onto SMB after Park Way dead ends, but if you’re an experienced rider, it’s totally possible. Or you can ride on the path along the north side lawn.

Overall it’s like riding in a dream. No cars. Smooth pavement. Some truly magical sights. It’s a Secret Garden.

Riding a bike is so awesome because it occurs at exactly the right speed.

In a car, the idea is always to collapse time in order to accomplish many things at once, so you never notice anything. On your own two feet, the world unfolds at leisure, unfurling like a cat, and it is so leisurely, in fact, that you don’t even see it moving. But at a crisp ten or thirteen miles per hour clip, the fabric of the universe flutters at your passage because you are moving fast enough to stir it, but slow enough to feel the breeze of energy it produces.

In Los Angeles, it requires a special sort of dedication to favor two wheels over four, but I will never understand the strife between them. Some of the scariest moments of my life have occurred on my bicycle, often driven by malicious intent. Yes, I’ve run and raced through stop signs and yellow lights, but no more than your average driver has. Impatience and frustration is a symptom of entitlement, but five seconds is potentially a lifetime to me.

Still I ride, and generally without incident. I never want to do it, and even as I pull on my helmet I consider my car keys, but once I am pedaling in LA’s perfect riding weather, I am so glad I did not take the car. Each ride is a small adventure and an opportunity for self improvement (Because I am getting lazier and lazier and leaving my apartment for work later and later). Moving at the speed of meditation, I can’t begin to explain the nirvana of catching the scent of night flowers blooming, hearing someone sing with all her heart in her car at a stop light, another person quickening his step to return some unknowingly dropped item to a very grateful human being, riding along Venice Beach just after sunrise, looking out at a sprawlng city coated in dusk from the Observatory after a long long climb.

I like driving my car, but I love riding my bike. One good ride can clear your whole mind, nourish your body, and center your soul. It’s a potent mix of endorphins, good health, and sunshine. Maybe it’s even a little addictive. Moving in sync with the rotation of the stars, it’s almost as if time becomes suspended, and all around you the life energy is humming. It’s a frequency that resonates with the beat of your heart, and your heart stops, and then suddenly an opening in space appears. But just as you are about to peer inside, you pass it, and wonder if it was a dream.

Thirteen miles per hour later you’re certain it wasn’t.

I’m deadly exhausted and in desperate need of a weekend from my weekend, and what’s more they say that redundancy kills.

So in the interest of living for tomorrow (And, more importantly, driving Trent home), I will simply let the photos do the talking (yelling, laughing, kissing, dancing).

There are still more to wade through – like, about five hundred more, so you’re going to have to wait to see them. Don’t you know that patience is a virtue?

Oh, and also? I’ve become obsessed with Kids Incorporated re-imaginations of once popular music…because I’m twenty-five and nostalgic for things I’d only like to think I remember.

Just. Wow.

Wednesday: Fix a flat, Go Ask Alice photos, Capricorn Party, & Heart On

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

Well well well, it’s Wednesday. And not too unexpectedly – since it’s Hump Day and all – I’m sort of sleepy. Even though it’s not raining anymore (Though I hear it’s in the forecast for this week), it’s still pouring, and what that means is that I am happily busy and pleasantly exhausted. But – exhausted none the less.

First! I wanted to show you this amusing & informative (How often does that happen) video about how to fix a flat. Accompanied by a pretty hep song, if ya know what I mean.

Which reminds me…I’ve got to do more work encouraging women in the bike shop. How & when did “feminist” become a dirty word?

I’ll think about that another time.

For now – speaking of feminism – some of the first Go Ask Alice photos have surfaced. Stephanie – without whom the party simply would not have happened – has written a brief little account of the weekend and posted some of her own photos. Have a look.

And also, have a look at these things.

Saturday February 6th
This flier is actually totally wrong, but if you click it, you’ll be righted right away. It’s a sort of second, or third – or I am not sure – birthday party for Yours Truly.

Sunday February 7th
And this is my regular first Sunday photobooth gig. If you plan on missing out on $3 New Castles, why…there is simply no cure for you.

And with that, kats & kittens, this kitty is headed to bed.

Monday: Calling all artists! Fliers: BIKEROBABES!

Tomorrow night make sure to come out to my second photobooth run at BiKEROBABES! Come get a photo with your beloved bicycle!

Click on the flier for more information!

Tuesday December 8th

By the way, I am looking for Alice in Wonderland themed art by wome(y)n artists for my birthday party January 30th! If this includes you or someone you know, email me at Happy.Land.2007@gmail.com and we’ll talk!

I hope you are keeping that date open, because it is going to be a mad mad evening!

Go Ask Alice

Monday: Fliers: BIKEROBABES

Monday, November 16th, 2009

While drinking in the middle of the day might seem like a very inviting idea – and it was quite inviting – the problem is that today I made my Dark and Stormy a little too…well, dark, and very very stormy. I managed to get a lot of important things done today (Cleaned my apartment, put t-shirt orders in the mail, bought groceries, did my laundry, deposited a check, wrote some emails), but see, now I think that very inviting midday Dark and Stormy (On a rather sunny day) has invited a rather sludgy hangover. And so my to-do list stands mockingly incomplete. Drat.

But I have not come here empty-handed! In fact, I want to tell you about how last week’s BIKEROBABES went tremendously well! We served several customers, both ladies and lads, and the fellas donned dresses and skirts to express their support for women in the shop. I learned about removing cogs and brushed up on my wheel truing skills. So thank you to all you BIKEROBABES&BOYS;! Now get ready for Round Two!

Tuesday November 17th
at Bikerowave!

I have a lot of neat stuff in store for the rest of the week – including a music review and some rad upcoming events – so stay tuned!

In the meantime, got some Polaroids hanging around? Why not show them! There’s an open call for Polaroids for a show in January – get on it!
