gurl, i've a feeling that you'd both love and rock at growing your own produce. tomatoes, esp, are really easy and you can do it easily even without a proper yard. herbs (esp mint and sage) are super easy, as are salad greens, kale and chard. (plus it's way cheaper than the farmers market!)

Alissia, you bring up a really really good point, a lot of the stuff that has occurred to me as I learn more and more about this. What is womanhood? Who is allowed in the club? I call myself woman but I hate stuff like shaving my legs, plucking my eyebrows, or anything that is "girly" (For myself, of course, other women can do what they want, I don't care), but some of those things may be stuff that other people use to help identify as the gender (They may not have been born as). I wonder about that, because that's not what being a woman means to me. Is it perpetuating the stereotypes I strive to destroy? But am I saying there is only one way to be a woman? Shouldn't you have a right to define it for yourself? Aren't you beautiful? The short answer is I think you (General "you," not you - Alissia) should do whatever the fuck you want to align your appearance with the image that you have of yourself in your heart, but I want people to also know that you don't have to look to conventions to define beauty.

The points you bring up are exactly why he should don the mantle...as an example of what a true feminist looks like. A lot of people misunderstand and misuse the word...and the folks who outright abuse it are not truly feminists.

The history of movements neglecting certain groups within them is a long one. Feminism wasn't always acknowledging of the plights of women of color. And as I learn more, I wonder where transgendered people are going to fit into the whole thing.

The point is feminism should be class, race, and sex (But not gender!) blind. Transwomen are feminists and transmen are feminists. Anyone who says otherwise, or who who tries to deny you "entrance into the club" for your "level" of womanhood is someone who could do with even just the first day of a Women's Studies intro class.

Thank you for the dialogue! Discussions like this are a great way to discover, explore, and synthesize information.

I gratefully applaud your dad and your family. That he does not 'own' the word feminist does not bother me. I am more bothered by those who either claim the mantle without the actions and deeds, or worse yet those who claim it but them pick and choose who is allowed into 'their' club.

I have met you a few times in places where those of us who are non-conforming (to put it mildly) gather. We who are often eliminated from feminism and sometimes from womanhood in general. We are still discriminated against, and it will be a long fight. We have made progress though. Those like yourself, your brother, and your parents are the new generation, not isolated by age, but freed by open mindedness and acceptance that not everyone fits in the same box.

This is a wonderful tribute to your father and your family, and I apologize for kind of hijacking it to rant. You should be proud of them, and most of all proud of yourself.

I know the guy you're talking about! He ran up to our secretary in the parking garage and started enjoying himself all over her car window! She locked the doors and called the police, apparently he'd done that to other women in the parking garage as well!
